Dust mites are a huge problem in all of our homes. Most of us have sinus and allergy problems, and dust mites are one of the biggest causes. As we spend more and more time in our homes, we end up with more and more dust mites. When we move from place to place, we bring even more back with us.
So how can we try to get rid of the dust mites in your home? Here are a few tips:
Use Hot Water
One thing you can do is use hot water when you wash anything that is soft, but the key is that it has to be really hot. The water must be at least 140°F to eliminate the mites. You will want to do this at least once a week to really make an impact, but you must have durable sheets that will withstand the impact of all that washing and hot water.
One of the items in your home that has the most dust mites is your mattress! There can be over 1 million dust mites at any time. Sadly, you can’t just eliminate them all or ensure that you have a completely clean mattress. But you may improve it by investing in a hypoallergenic mattress or at least get a mattress protector.
Making your bed, especially with tight corners and pressed duvets could lead to an increase in dust mites. Instead, give your mattress an airing by hanging up your duvet or at least keeping everything separated. It might not feel as good to slip into at night, but it will hopefully alleviate allergy problems. Of course, buying hypoallergenic sheets is another great option.
Carpets are another source that collect the dust mites that enter your home. Even if you vacuum and steam clean your carpets, you will still have issues with dust mites. Hardwood flooring is the best option, but if you need carpeting, get area rugs that you can take outside and beat.
Some dust mites will still come in from outside. You can dust proof your windows by installing quality screens that will intercept it. You may also want to eliminate any thick curtains and drapes, they are also keeping the dust in your home.
